21.06.2008 News
Brno (Czech Republic) - The International Jury of the 23rd International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2008 worked at the Moravian Gallery in Brno from 15Â16 June 2008, in the following representation: Lucille Tenazas (USA) Â Chair, Jonathan Barnbrook (UK), Petra Ãerne Oven (Slovenia/UK) Â Vice-chair, Zuzana Lednick? (CZ), Gertrud Nolte (Germany), Fumio Tachibana (Japan), Otakar Karlas (CZ). The objective was to select from among the exhibited works the best ones that will be awarded any of the Brno Biennial 2008 prestigious prizes.
This year, the submissions for the international competition included more than 1600 works by nearly 400 artists; out of them, ca 600 works by 162 artists from 27 countries were selected by the Pre-selection Committee at its meeting of 23 January 2008. Traditionally, the strongest represented countries in the competition were the Czech Republic, Japan, Germany, the USA and Switzerland.
Lucille Tenazas, speaking on behalf of the International Jury as its Chair, evaluated the whole competition: ÂThe Jury was in agreement that there was a high level quality in the works submitted from all over the world. Not surprisingly, there was a large representation from the Czech Republic in all categories. In an unusual display of solidarity, they were unanimous in their decision to award designers whose works had thoughtful and intelligent content which was presented in imaginative and original ways. Aware of its unique role in selecting this yearÂs International Graphic Design Biennial awards, the jury noted that the works they chose represented an attitude with an eye towards the state of the future of design in its varied and complex manifestations.Â
The main exhibition is open for visitors at the Moravian Gallery in Brno  the Museum of Applied Arts (Husova St. 14) until 19 October, 2008.
