Warsaw (Poland) - The International Poster Biennale in Warsaw was established in 1966 and is one of the most prestigious events in the world dedicated to the art of posters. This year’s Biennale will go down in history as the edition with the greatest number of posters sent. What is worth noticing is that together with recognised graphic designers, more and more young artists participate in Wilanów Biennale. This year the number of posters sent for The Henryk Tomaszewski Golden Debut doubled.

The goal of the Biennale is "to confront the best achievements in poster design of artists from various countries in order to better understand forms of expression in modern poster design in the world.” This was the motto of the first Biennale organised in 1966. The initiator of the competition was Józef Mroszczak, who thanks to his contacts, world fame and organisation skills was able to create first, and so far the most important, review of poster art. If today we think about poster design as art, it is thanks to Warsaw Biennale and the International Poster Museum in Wilanów - the first museum in the world that collects posters.

For over four decades, every two years in June, Warsaw becomes the place where artists from different regions of the world, representing different generations, meet. As this yearÂ’s edition proves the popularity of this way of artistic expression is not disappearing. Traditional poster has not been pushed aside as something of marginal importance and boldly comes back to the urban space and celebrates triumphs in galleries and museums. The last editions of Biennale showed a big artistic potential of the young generation of designers whose works were very highly recognized by the jury, critics and the audience.

This year’s record number of 3068 posters sent by 1338 designers from 58 countries proved the ongoing popularity of the Warsaw competition. The exhibition in Wilanów will present just one fourth of all the posters sent – 510 in the Professional Category: Ideological, Cultural, and Advertising and 150 in The Henryk Tomaszewski Golden Debut category. It will be a great opportunity to see what is now best in poster design and make yourself familiar with the newest trends in world graphic design.

"It was fantastic to see so many great international posters on show, and to meet so many posters artists, students, collectors and curators," Margaret Timmers from Victoria & Albert Museum in London remembers her participation in Biennale in 2006. "It was an inspiring occasion, and we felt very honoured to be part of it. It showed the poster flourishing in exciting new ways, and I left with a great admiration for Polish culture and the Polish poster tradition, for the city of Warsaw, and for the Poster Museum and Biennale.”

The International Poster Biennale is endorsed by Icograda, who awards the special MBP prize. Among the prize winners, participants, judges, and supporters of the competition are names of the world most recognized designers: Andy Warhol, Paul Davis, Kazumasa Nagai, Masuteru Aoba, Shigeo Fukuda, Holger Mathies, André Fran?ois, Grapus, Stefan Sagmeister, Paula Scher – to name a few.

A well known graphic designer Tapani Aartomaa remembers his first appearance at Biennale in 1971: "My trip to Poland was a turning point. My life as a designer gained a new meaning and nothing was the same as before. As a result Biennale in Warsaw (…) had a great influence on my life, not only as a poster exhibition, but as well as a point where music, theater, art, and architecture met in the center of European culture”.
