Vancouver (Canada) - On Friday, 5 February 2010, Vancouver was treated to a panel of some of the world's most influential authorities on design and the value of design. In town to judge the entries for , the group featured some very impressive people:

  • Julia Hoffmann: the lead designer on Jon Stewart's award-winning bestseller book.
  • Mark Randall: a renowned expert on design and sustainability.
  • Louise Fili: has work in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and the Biblitheque Nationale.
  • Matt Warburton: has won more than 70 design awards in more than 25 years as a designer.
  • Rolando Diep: the creative director of one of the most recognised and prestigious design firms in Mexico.

Held at District 319, a restored theatre in Vancouver's historic Chinatown, attendees gathered to mingle before the program began. The audience was treated to individual presentations on the theme of Reflection | Projection: a reflection on the past two years of design, and a projection of where the industry is going.

The night began with Julia Hoffmann, creative director at MoMA in New York City, who discussed the challenges of working with an institution with such a defined brand. She also highlighted some of her work from earlier in her career, most notably from her time with Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Colorado.

Next, Mark Randall talked about the work at WorldStudio, also in New York City. He discussed the studio's balance between for-profit and not-for profit work. Rounding out the New York contingent, Louise Fili shared her work in brand identity and packaging for food companies and restaurants.

Rolando Diep took the stage to share some of his work at Landor Associates, and followed with a discussion of innovative, sustainable design from all over the world. Finally, British Columbia's own Matt Warburton, Fellow of the GDC, discussed influential Canadian design, stamps and his love of Cooper Black.

The night wrapped up with a group discussion to address audience questions. It was an illuminating glimpse into the design philosophy of some of the industry's best... before they set out to judge Canada's best.

The weekend continued with judging of the Graphex 2010 submissions at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The process was hard and intense for all the judges as they went through nearly 340 entries over two days. The results are a fantastic selection of the best of this year's submissions. It was noted by the judging coordinators that the online entry system reduced the amount of paperwork accompanying submissions by a huge amount, making these the "greenest" Graphex awards yet! Right now, Graphex co-chairs and volunteers are working on what will be an incredible award ceremony at the Graphex Gala night on 29 April at the Sheraton Wall Centre. Debbie Millman will be the evening's MC. This event will also be part of the closing events for .

The Graphex winners will be showcased at the Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver from 3-15 May 2010. The traveling exhibit will continue its journey through Canada, starting at the Museum of Vancouver (MOV). More details will be available soon.
