Finalists announced for 2009 Dutch Design Awards
07.09.2009 News
Eindhoven (The Netherlands) - The names of the 74 finalists in the 2009 Dutch Design Awards were announced on Thursday, 3 September. The finalists in this 7 edition of internationally recognised professional awards have been selected from more than 700 projects by committees comprised of experts in the design field. The winners - competing for a total of 20 awards in the main categories of Communication, Product, and Spatial - are chosen by an international jury and introduced to the design world during the festive Award Show on 17 October 2009, together with the winners of Awards in the following special categories: The Golden Eye (most successful design of 2009), the Audi Design Award (public award), the Rado Young Designer Award (incentive award for young talent), the Best Client Award, and the BNO - Piet Zwart Life Time Achievement Award. The designs of all finalists and winners will subsequently be exhibited for one week in the Brainport Greenhouse on the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week.
Dutch design has for many years now maintained a leading position among the very best design in the world, both nationally and internationally. Like previous years, the quality level of the work competing for one of the internationally renowned Dutch Design Awards was high. Dutch designers are trained to follow their own way in the interplay of forces between the demand of the market and the wishes of the user and the authorities, and in doing so, increase the quality and social relevance of their designs. In these areas, they are often trendsetters. In this 7 edition of the Awards, too, a number of recurring themes could be identified. In their designs, a number of the participants, for instance, clearly focus on authenticity: both the origin of the product and the development process receive renewed attention. Also issues such as sustainability and ease of use are highly recognisable in all categories. Furthermore, the organisation has noticed a shift in the role of design. Design is recognised as an important factor for the success of a product at a much earlier stage in the design process, and constitutes the bridge between advanced technology and intuitive ease of use.
