Sydenham (United Kingdom) - On 7 August 2008, Icograda Friend will give a presentation on his efforts to find a balance between commercial demands and the environmental character of Jordan's second city, Amman. Co-presenting will be Kollette Super of Coventry School of Art & Design.
Amman has experienced rapid economic growth since the 1920's and there is now a huge amount of random signing and advertising that almost overwhelm the city streets.
Signing was originally in the hands of traditional calligraphers with the knowledge and understanding of the rules and beauty of calligraphy. These were led by several well known masters of this art form.
However, recent mass production techniques, together with the sheer amount of signing, the abuse of design aesthetics and the conflicts with architectural heritage have led to the current uncontrolled situation.
