Leipzig (Germany) - The city of Leipzig has selected South Korean
typographer Ahn Sang-soo as the recipient of the 2007 Gutenberg-Preis.
The prize will be awarded during the Leipzig book fair on 23 March 2007
by the mayor of the city Leipzig, Burkhard Jung.
In selectiong this year's laureate, the jurors said, "Ahn Sang-soo is a typographer of rare creative strength and extraordinary sensibility. His ground-breaking/innovative script layout and typographic font design led to a revolutionary reformation/modernisation of the Korean Hangul script. His deep understanding of script opened for him "ways to new dimensions of expression". His works combine casual/relaxed/unconventional deep rooted tradition with the language of our times. His books, posters and his whole written publications show a rich fantasy, outstanding sensibility and are of high aesthetical appeal. His works are an essential contribution to the culture of scripture." Ahn Sang-soo, born in 1952, currently teaches typography Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. He is past Vice President of the Icograda Executive Board (1997-2001).
Established in 1959, in commemoration of Johannes Gutenberg, the prize is awarded to persons and institutions who render outstanding and exemplary contributions to the advancement of book art. It recognises outstanding artistic, technical or scientific contributions in the field of typography, book illustration, book edition and book production.
