A LITHUANIAN PERSPECTIVE ON GRAPHIC DESIGN
30.05.2002 News
Brussels (Belgium) - Audrius Klimas will present the history of Lithuanian graphic design in an Icograda 'Design Perspectives' Seminar on 17 June 2002. Showcasing works from the Middle Ages to the present, Klimas will address how political and social change has impacted the Lithuanian approach to graphic design.
Visual expression in Lithuania has evolved with Eastern Europe's changing ideals and needs. Lithuanian wood cuts from the 19th century, though technically simplistic, bear the deep religious and mythological ideals of that time. Posters in Lithuania during World War I and II served to foster patriotism in the face of political instability.
During Soviet occupation, the function of graphic design turned to more decorative purposes, and state symbols such as the Lithuanian coat of arms (Vytis, or White Knight), the Vytis cross and Gedimino stulpai were considered a threat to political authorities. Lithuania's independence in 1991 brought the re-establishment of these heraldic symbols and a wave of economic change. The nation's graphic design profession and design service industry are now driven by current business developments, technological advancements and the growing culture of consumerism.
