30.03.2004 News
Brussels (Belgium) - Design Austria (DA), the Austrian professional association of graphic designers, illustrators and product designers, organises a yearly international competition, the Joseph Binder Award, which for the first time was held in 1996. It is named after one of the association s founding fathers, Joseph Binder (1898-1972), who revolutionised contemporary visual design both in Europe and the United States. This year's competition explores new developments and tendencies in the fields of graphic design and illustration.
The competition is open to professional designers and design students, who may participate either as individuals or teams and enter projects realised between May 1, 2000 and April 30, 2004. Entries may be submitted in the following categories: Corporate Design, Communication Design, Information Design, Poster Design, Editorial Design, Typography, Packaging and Illustration. A special category, Design Fiction, has been introduced for unpublished works and independent projects. The deadline for sending entries is May 7, 2004. The number of entries is not limited. Entry fees: Euro 65.00 for the first entry; Euro 45.00 for each further entry; for each series consisting of two or more related works there will be a surcharge of Euro 20.00 (plus 20% VAT). Students and members of DA, AGD and SGD* will receive a reduction of 50 and 25 percent respectively.
An international jury of experts will select the winning entries as well as an additional number of outstanding works, which will be shown in an award exhibition in Vienna and other European cities and presented in a catalogue. The members of the jury are: Anna Berkenbusch (Germany), Christine Fent (Great Britain), Joachim Maatz (Germany), Darren Major (Australia/Austria), Danilo Silvestri (Switzerland), Peter Stemmler (USA/Germany), Niklaus Troxler (Switzerland) and Silvano Vidale (Luxemburg). In each category, the jury will award Joseph Binder Award Trophies in gold, silver and bronze. In the Design Fiction category there will also be three money prizes totalling Euro 6,000.00.
