The EPDA was formed in 1991, when a number of Europe's leading designers identified a deeply-felt need for a new, European forum. IFRRO works to increase on an international basis the lawful use of copyright works and eliminate unauthorised copying by promoting efficient Collective Management of rights through RROs. IFRRO facilitates co-operation among RROs as well as with and among authors, creators, publishers and their associations. The International Society of Typographic Designers [ISTD] is the only international authoritative body for typography. ISTD aims to inform and inspire typographers, graphic designers, writers and educators engaged in the field of visual communication. Membership of ISTD denotes not only competence to design, but also acceptance of agreed standards and ethics of working. Founded as the British Typographers Guild in 1928 by compositor Vincent Steer, who was described as an ‘advertising typographer’ as early as 1911, its common bond was a passion for the arrangement of words on paper.

The OHIM is the official authority carrying out the intellectual property rights procedures for the Community trade marks since 1996 and for the Community registered design since 2003. These intellectual property rights are valid in all the countries of the EU. A uniform law applies to trade marks and designs, thereby providing strong and unique protection throughout the European Union. The uniformity means that formalities and management can be simplified and carried out in a single administrative centre—the OHIM. The simplification results in considerably reduced costs as compared with the overall costs of national registration in all countries of the European Union.
