INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DESIGN POLICY OPENS TODAY

Torino (Italy) - The Lingotto Conference Center opened its doors today for the "Shaping the Global Design Agenda." This two-day international conference on design policy brings together key influencers and representatives from government, business, education, research and design as well as senior figures from the design promotion and support sectors. These delegates will explore and challenge best and emerging practice and exchange knowledge, ideas and insights based on state-of-the-art case studies from around the world.
Day one included keynote presentations by: Song Weizu, Representative of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress; Director, Beijing Industrial Design Centre, Yrjö Stamaa, President and Professor, University of Art and Design Helsinki (Taik) and Ibrahim Al Jaidah, Managing Director, Arab Engineering Bureau, Qatar.
These presentations were followed by the first of three international design panels, chaired by Jean Schneider, APCI, Paris. Participants in the Panel on Design and the economy included: Giselle Raulik-Murphy, Design Wales, UK; Jan R. Stavik, Managing Director, Norwegian Design Council and Vice President, Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA); Mika Tagaki, Deputy Director, Policy Office for Design, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan; and Sun Yixian, Art Design College of China, Jiliang University, Founder of Institute of Industrial Design Ningbo China (IIDNC), China.
Following the presentations, the ‘International Design Casa’ locations from Austria, Belgium, Central and Eastern Europe, France, Japan, Norway, The Netherlands, Seoul, Singapore and Spain were open to the delegates.
Giorgetto Giugiaro, a renowned Italian design figure, will address the conference dinner.
Day two includes presentations from: David Kester, Chief Executive, The Design Council, London; Fumio Hasegawa, Deputy Director-General (Industry & Distribution), Civic & Economic Affairs Bureau, City of Nagoya; and Giorgiana Penón Orlich, Ministry of Culture and Youth, Department of Design.
Two further international design policy panels will ensure that conference debate continues to challenge and inspire. Design and society: catalysing sustainable change, with guest chair Ezio Manzini, Milan Politechinc, will include panelists: Dorenda Britten, Director, desigindustry, New Zealand; Leimei Julia Chiu, Director, International Design Centre, Nagoya; Georges Poussin, Chief, Section of Creative Industries for Development, Division of Cultural Expressions and Creative Industries, Culture Sector, UNESCO; and Robert Jan Marringa, Manager, Design Connection, Brainport Eindhoven.
The panel on Design and complexity - catalysing sustainable change will be chaired by Joachim Spangenberg, Sustainable Europe Research Institute, Vienna and Cologne. Panelists include: Ibrahim Al Jaidah, Director, Arab Engineering Bureau, Qatar; Professor Ezio Manzini, Unit of Research DIS - Design and Innovation for Sustainability, Politecnico di Milano; and Stenar Valade-Amland, Director, Danish Designers.
At the end of the conference, the official convocation ceremony will pass the designation of World Design Capital™ from Torino (2008) to Seoul (2010).
