Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) - Icograda President Leimei Julia Chiu recently visited Kuala Lumpur for the first time, on an official visit by invitation from Malaysia Design Council (MRM) and Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA). During her five days in Malaysia she promoted the upcoming Rediscovery: Icograda Design Week 2012 (IWD 2012) in Sarawak, met with representatives of the major design organisations and fostered relations between its government and that of Japan.
In support of IDW 2012 Leimei met with government officials to elicit further participation in the event, opened sponsorship opportunities from both the public and private sectors and conducted a press conference in Kuala Lumpur. President Chiu took a day trip to Kuching to visit the venues for IDW2012 and meet with stakeholders and the Sarawak team.
Leimei met with representatives from major design organisations - including PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects), PEREKA (Malaysia Industrial Design Association), MINDS (Malaysian Invention and Design Society), FINAS (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia) - to initiate dialogue around the challenges the creative sector faces in Malaysia. She contributed her views on Japan's successful creative industry model that has been copied by many Asian countries including South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) and Singapore.
President Chiu conducted a workshop at Sunway University with local design students, educators and creative professionals in promotion of Rediscovery: Icograda Design Week 2012 in Kuching. At the workshop, Leimei shared current global design trends: designers are looking beyond and making their ideas matter; design ideas that can change the world. Students mixed with professionals to brainstorm and discuss the problems they face during the interactive session.
On her final day, Leimei had a closed-session meeting with MRM council members to discuss collaboration on the IDW 2012 along with issues pertaining to the design industry. Later that day, she held a media briefing and interview at the Grand Seasons Hotel, Kuala Lumpur with the local media.
