Essen (Germany) - The communication design industry celebrated the prize-winners of this year's Red Dot Award: Communication Design on 23 November 2005 in Essen's Philharmonic Concert Hall and later at the 'Late Night Party' in the Red Dot Design Museum. More than 800 designers, entrepreneurs, and design fans from around the world came to the award presentation. The highlight of the night was the moment the winners of the competition's two main prizes (whose names had been kept secret until the very last minute) were announced. This year's Grand Prix, worth Euro 10 000, for the best work from the more than 3 000 entries, went to the Swiss Nestro AG for their concept design of the biography 'Die mutige Pionierin - Warda Bleser-Birchers Jahrhundert' (The courageous pioneer - The century of Warda Bleser-Bircher). The book 'Frau Wow' (Misses Wow), designed by Katja Schwalenberg, a young designer from Leipzig, was judged the best student work, receiving the junior prize and Euros 2 500.

Grand Prix: "An extraordinary form for an extraordinary life"
"The biography 'The courageous pioneer' describes the extraordinary life of the geologist and paleontologist Warda Bleser-Bircher, who is one hundred years old now, in a likewise extraordinary way. The design supports the interweaving as well as the structuring of the different pieces of information at the same time and forms an original contrast to the history of a hundred years, which shall in this way also be made more accessible for the younger generations," says Professor Peter Zec, initiator of the Red Dot Design Award and President of the world umbrella organisation of industrial design, ICSID. The prize-money of Euros 10 000 for the winner of the Red Dot: Grand Prix has was sponsored by the Essen-based company Krenzler Graf Biermann oHG. Another two outstanding works were nominated for the Red Dot: Grand Prix: 'decodeunicode' by the Faculty of Design, University of Applied Sciences Mainz, and the Porsche promotional film 'Trotzdem' (nevertheless) by Klaus E. Kuster advertising agency, Frankfurt on Main.

Junior prize: a little masterpiece on the subject of being a woman
In her book 'Frau Wow' (Misses Wow) the junior prize winner Katja Schwalenberg literally sketches the many facets of being a woman in 21 chapters. Each chapter is designed in a different graphic language of forms, two from portraits through pencil drawing to wax crayon drawing - "a true little masterpiece, which has instantly impressed the members of the jury with its concept and loving execution", said Zec. Further nominated works were 'Im Takt' (In the rhythm) by Michaela Burger from Dusseldorf and the interactive application 'Wetterkuche' (Weather kitchen) by Marc Karpstein, Amsterdam and Bernhard Staiber, Dusseldorf.

2005 results and publication
In total, more than 200 of the 3 000 entries submitted to the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2005 received the 'Red dot' quality seal for high and another 25 the 'Red Dot: Best of the Best' for highest design quality. This year, the special prize 'Red Dot: Digital Media', which has been awarded to the best work in the field of digital media since 2004, went to the Neue Digitale agency in Frankfurt on Main for their design of the internet appearance for the adidas sport style label 'Y-3', which stood out from among all the submitted works due to its originality.
