DUTCH DESIGN AND ARTS POLICY DEBATE
05.10.2008 News
Amsterdam (The Netherlands) - How should the Dutch governmentÂs arts policy change in the next four years with respect to design and fashion? And what can we do about it?
Premsela and Items magazine aim to answer these questions at the debate, Arts Policy Agenda: How About Design...? The debate will take place on Wednesday 8 October, from 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm at De Balie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Expert panelists Max Bruinsma (Items), Bart Hofstede (Dutch Ministry of Culture), Dingeman Kuilman (Premsela), Gitta Luiten (Mondriaan Foundation) and Timo de Rijk (Netherlands Council for Culture) will address timely policy issues. For instance, 'Dutch Design' - that icon of white culture - is threatening a monopoly. Should we do something about that? Should Dutch designers contribute to the Netherlands cultural transformation?
The panel will also discuss public participation in the arts. Design and fashion speak to a broad public, as we see from the success of FreeDesigndom and Streetlab. Are there opportunities for broader participation in the arts here? Do design and fashion offer a broader basis for subsidised culture? Or should government leave creativity to the market?
Finally, the panel will examine designÂs place witih respect to cultural policy. Is it more than just a feather in the cap of economic interests? Should we be doing a better job of spotlighting designÂs significance for social and cultural innovation? And can money be freed up for the development of the profession itself?
Admission is free for those who book in advance through Annette Geerts, geerts@premsela.org. The debate will take place in Dutch.
