DESIGN MONTREAL OPEN HOUSE: MONTREAL'S DESIGNERS WELCOME YOU
19.04.2007 News
Montreal (Canada) - In the wake of Montreal's recent designation as a
"UNESCO City of Design," the Design Montreal bureau, in partnership
with the design community, is launching the first edition of Design
Montreal Open House day, to be held 5 May 2007. Admission is free, and
visitors will have access to over forty of the design firms and local
sites that have won awards at national and international competitions.
This event is aimed at acquainting the general public with the fields of design and architecture and at showcasing the richness, diversity and talent of our city's designers. The Design Montreal Open House concept owes its originality to a selection of local projects and professionals from all the domains of design and architecture.
Actress Macha Limonchik, the spokesperson of Design Montreal Open House, says "many of us are intimidated by the idea of design and designers, but we should not feel that way. Designers in every field - graphics, industrial design, architecture, interior decor, landscaping, city planning or fashion - are open and friendly people who really love their work, as you will see once you meet them. This event is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to talk to the people who design and create the environment around us. I hope the public will come in droves to these admission-free Open Houses."
Montreal, UNESCO City of Design
In June 2006, Montreal became the first city in North America to join the recently created UNESCO City of Design network, after Buenos Aires (August 2005) and Berlin (November 2005). UNESCO awarded this title in recognition of Montreal's potential for economic, cultural and social development in the field of design.
"This designation as a UNESCO city of design is a major international recognition for Montreal. On Design Montreal Open House day, Montrealers and visitors will discover or rediscover the talent and achievements which, throughout our city, bear witness to the creative vitality recognized by UNESCO. I believe that the power of design, architecture and urban development contributes directly to the quality of life of Montrealers, fosters a sense of pride in their city and sparks the interest of tourists and investors," said Benoit Labonte, member of the executive committee responsible for culture, heritage, the downtown area and design.
The designers of Montreal's award-winning projects will be there for you On Design Montreal Open House day, the offices of Montreal designers acclaimed in the past two years at competitions in interior, industrial, graphic, architectural, landscape and urban design, will open their doors to show us the projects that won them prestigious awards. The designers of the award-winning Montreal projects that can be visited (buildings, squares, parks, streets, interiors) or viewed (urban furniture, street signs and the like) will be there to talk about their work and answer questions. In the domain of fashion, a number of local designers selected by a committee of experts will also be on hand.
Design Montreal Open House is a city initiative in partnership with the Ministere de la Culture et des Communications du Quebec under the Agreement on the Cultural Development of Montreal and the STM. Design Montreal was created in January 2006 by the city to implement the city's action plan for enhancing local design as well as Montreal's reputation as a city of design.
