BIO 22 award-winners are announced

Ljubljana (Slovenia) - The international Jury has presented this year's BIO Awards. Jury members Vivian Cheng Wai Kwan (Hong Kong), Luigi Ferrara (Canada), Malcolm Garrett (United Kingdom), Peter Kreèiè (Slovenia) and Sanna Simola (Finland) selected the recipients of three BIO Gold Medals, ten BIO Honourable Mentions, seven BIO Quality Concept Awards and and Award for a Student Work.
The consensus of the jury was to reward a type of design that displayed certain fundamental characteristics. The work should not be over-designed and should demonstrate innovation, simplicity, clarity, and aesthetic quality, while exploiting technological opportunities and responding to contemporary social concerns. In all cases chosen designs showed that the designers had carefully studied physical and social needs and created honest, authentic, technically appropriate and sustainable design solutions. The concern was not just for the shape or the form; it was essential that the design have real purpose in people's lives, whether practical or aspirational.
Other selected designs also reflect the diversity of the entrants, ranging from the highly technical to the everyday. Intelligent design was clearly evident across this range, whether specialised or generic, which was particularly reassuring to the jury as it proved that the principles of effective design are universal. Specialised objects, such as a plane or a tram, thus sit happily alongside a lamp, a plant pot or a label on a bottle or packet. In all cases the results showed an inherent integrity of form, offering a variety of expression while maintaining a strong sense of identity.
Many selections were about bringing joy into life by rethinking the obvious - the surprise of a plant that grows upside down, playing a lamp like a musical instrument, or, most exuberantly, sparking a passion for flight in an environmentally friendly glider.
A satisfying trend among the winning designers was to think of design as creating a framework rather than simply crafting a specific form. The designs considered the users' requirements and the nature of their interaction with a product or service. With experience at the heart of design, making things understandable and encouraging active participation becomes the goal, whether by attending the local theatre, sampling a local wine, going cross-country skiing, or drinking fortified tea.
The jury made particular note of the high standard of design and design appreciation throughout Slovenia that is consistently recognised and upheld at BIO.
