BIO 21 AWARD WINNERS SELECTED
05.10.2008 News
Ljubljana (Slovenia) - On 4 October 2008, the was officially opened by Dr Danilo Türk, the President of the Republic of Slovenia. The International Jury selected the award-winners from among the exhibited works. The awards were presented by Victor Margolin, Chair of the BIO 21 Jury, Mojca Kucler Dolinar, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, and Zoran Jankoviã, the Mayor of Ljubljana.
From the submissions, is was clear that today's designers are less concerned with the object itself (form and function) and are instead more concerned with how their products affect the user's quality of life. The award winners all exemplify this idea. They reinforced the fact that design has become a central component in the dynamic development of contemporary culture.
The Funicular Railway was selected as the Gold Medal winner because it represents an excellent integration of aesthetic, functional and user-centered qualities.
Likewise, the second Gold Medal winner, the Booklet for 40ish sheets of paper, brought together in a clever way the two seemingly disparate worlds of poetry with pragmatic commercial concerns.
For the other awards, the jury chose to consider the multidimensional aspects of the products, such as invention, durability, satisfaction of special needs, and emotional experience as evidence of quality products or visual communication.
The jury has agreed that, beyond a doubt, design is now central to the creation of a better quality of life for people everywhere.
