Australasian Student Design Awards 2011 Call for Entries launched

Melbourne (Australia) - The has launched the Call for Entries for the Australasian Student Design Awards (ASDA) for 2011. Unmatched in terms of integrity and diversity, the annual ASDA aims to elevate the region's high achieving undergraduate design students, apprentices and graduates by recognising their outstanding designs.
In recent years, Sustainable Design has moved past its pop-culture status to form a key requirement of any good design process.
Sustainable Designs allow us to live, work and play in such a way that is more efficient, profitable, secure and pleasurable but most importantly a way that does not compromise our future. Now as one of the defining ideas of the 21st century, Sustainability holds tremendous possibilities for designers.
So, it's only fitting that the DIA devotes one of its most prestigious awards to fostering Sustainable Design practices in the region's emerging designers.
Held for the last sixteen years between February and April, ASDA brings together designs from a multiplicity of disciplines and has helped increase awareness and action on life cycle and sustainable design practices.
Tertiary Institutions are invited to showcase their student's capabilities by nominating four designs per category that respond to the worlds changing needs, practice innovative design and reflect design excellence. ASDA's eleven diverse categories include Interior Design, Interior Decoration, Exhibition / Display Design, Visual Design, New Media Design, Industrial Design, Transport / Automotive Design, Furniture Design, Textile Design, Jewellery Design and Fashion Design.
Over 150 students were nominated in 2010, with a similar participation anticipated in 2011. Offering a great opportunity to expose their work to a broad audience, each entrant's design will be exhibited at Australia's leading design event, designEX. While demonstrating Australia and New Zealand's promising design future, the ASDA exhibition also provides esteemed industry judges the opportunity to directly comment on the quality of emerging designers.
As a not for profit professional association without the need for commercial considerations, the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is in a unique position to provide an impartial approach to awards programs. Each year the DIA reviews and improves the ASDA program, processes and criteria to ensure unbiased recognition by liaising between tertiary institutions and the design industry. Generous industry support also allows the DIA to present an award prize pool that includes cash, products, courses, publicity and DIA memberships.
Due to its sustainable theme and objective nature, the ASDA program has received ongoing endorsements from Icograda, IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers) and Mad! (mad! TAFE Media & Design Association).
Each year, the committee is inspired by the exceptional quality of design work, the breadth of thought and the strong consideration for sustainable practices reflected in ASDA entries. Such an influx of talent entering into the profession is an encouraging and positive sign of a strong future for region's design industry.
