AHN SANG-SOO, THE HANGUL TYPOGRAPHER

Istanbul (Turkey) - Born in Chungju, Korea in 1952, Ahn Sang-Soo is a leading figure in Korean typeface development and typographic design. He has invented a host of typefaces including one named after himself that break out of the square frame, which had been an inherent limitation in all Korean typefaces. Compared with their precursors, his typefaces have radical visual impacts.
He has fifteen books on design-related subjects to his credit and copious essays and papers. He holds a number of awards and prizes including a commendation by the Korean Language Academy for meritorious contribution to the advancement of Hangul. In 1983, he was selected as Designer of the Year by Design magazine.
His list of design achievements, both in Korea and abroad, includes the design and production of many major international exhibitions and over forty shows in which his work has featured. He regularly travels abroad to lecture on his projects and to promote Asian design developments and ideas. He is also editor/art director of the underground art-culture magazine Report/Report (1988-present). Ahn is also an AGI member.
During the Icograda Design Week in Istanbul, Ahn will be one of the 9 leaders of the '6 Alfabe' student workshop and he will make presentation of his work during the 'Building Bridges' seminar.

About he Icograda Design Week in Istanbul:
The two-day 'Building Bridges' seminar is part of the Icograda Design Week in Istanbul (Turkey), from 27 to 31 January 2004. This seminar is free of charge but registration is requested. Seats will be given on a 'first come, first served' basis. It will bring together designers from Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Denmark, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Russia, South Korea and Turkey to share their experiences and influences from their own regions. The seminar will showcase new perspectives on the diversity of graphic design today.

About the '6 Alfabe' student seminar
Hosted by the Istanbul Bilgi University in Istanbul (Turkey) the '6 Alfabe' student workshop will be held from 27 to 29 January 2004.
'6 Alfabe' means 6 alphabets in Turkish. Students will explore six writing systems and alphabets: the Roman, Hangul (South Korea), Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic and Devnagari (Hindi) alphabets.
The workshop will be conducted by 9 experts in graphic design and typograpy:

Oded Ezer (Israel)
Yaki Molcho (Israel)
Tagir Safayev (Russia)
Ashwini Deshpande (India)

The workshop is open to all students. There is no registration fee but registration will be done on a 'first come/first served basis.'
