Montreal (Canada) - On 26 October 2009, Prof. Ahn Sang-Soo, long considered one of the most influential designers in East Asia, received the Icograda Education Award at Xin: Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing, China. Prof. Ahn was presented with the recognition during the Congress opening ceremonies before a capacity crowd of 2000 delegates at Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts.
Head of the School of Graphic Design at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts, he was nominated by the Visual Information Design Association of Korea (VIDAK). From 1997 to 2001, Ahn served as an Icograda Vice President. During this period, he was responsible for the development of the Icograda Education Manifesto, which advocates that design education must be a learning-centred environment, enabling students to develop their potential in and beyond academic programs. Ahn has agreed to co-chair the 2010 review of the Manifesto, marking a decade since the document's launch at Oullim, the Icograda Millennium Congress in 2000.
Created in 2007, the Icograda Education Award is presented to an educator from a member of the Icograda Education Network, in recognition of outstanding innovation or achievement in design education. Prof. Hazel Gamec (Wanganui School of Design, New Zealand) received the inaugural award at Design/Culture: Icograda World Design Congress 2007 in La Habana, Cuba.
