On 18 October 2024 in Qingdao (China) on the occasion of the 30th General Assembly of our Members hosted by Member Tsinghua University, the 2024 President's Award, 2024 ICoD Achievement Awards, and 2024 ICoD Education Awards and were presented.
2024 ICoD PRESIDENT'S AWARD RECIPIENT
Beginning in 1970, the ICoD President's Award has been presented on a biennial basis by the Council's President. The trophy honours an outstanding contribution to the work of the Council.
Don Ryun Chang
Don Ryun Chang is being awarded for his outstanding service to ICoD as President of ICOGRADA from 2007-2009, and as Board Member from 2003-2011. Chang also played a key role as the Organising Chair for the 2015 International Design Congress in Gwangju Korea and was the Chair of the Design Advisory for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Korea.
In addition, Chang contributed to enhancing the international profile of Korean design during his term as Lead Chair of the International Design Alliance (IDA).
2024 ICoD President's Award recipient Don Ryun Chang. Don Ryun Chang is a prominent international academic and practicing figure in the field of branding and design, currently serving as adjunct Professor at the Yonsei University Songdo Underwood Campus. He was a tenured professor at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea for 25 years with the Faculty of Visual Communication Design and is the former Dean of the Graduate School of Film Media and Communications.
Don's contributions to design education and practice have been recognised with numerous awards and honors, reflecting his pivotal role in shaping modern branding and design methodologies and includes receiving the Presidential Medal from the Korean President for his important contribution as Design Chair for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. He also was the Organizing Chair for the 2015 Eeum Design World Congress co-hosted by the city of Gwangju and the Korean Ministry of Culture that was attended by more than 3,200 attendees and 400 speakers during a 7-day event that was the first Multidisiciplinary Design Event with the participation of 11 major international design organisations including ICoD.
2024 ICoD ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS
Created in 2001, the ICoD Achievement Award honours an outstanding career. The Award may be presented to an individual or a team in recognition of outstanding and consistent achievement in the practice, education or promotion of design. Achievement Award winners must be nominated by Council Members. This year’s Achievement Award recipients included Chao Zhao and Peter Childs. The ICoD Achievement Award is the award that was known as the Icograda Achievement Award previous to 2014.
Chao Zhao
Professor, Dr. Chao Zhao is Deputy Dean of Academy of Arts and Design, Vice Dean of Art and Science Research Institute, Chair Professor of Industrial Design, and Director of Healthcare Design Lab in Tsinghua University. He is also serve as Secretary-General of the Design Disciplinary Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education China, and Vice President of International Council of Design (ico-D). Professor Zhao has strong teaching, research and practice background in the areas of design. The wide-scope of design has won Dr. Zhao numerous awards, including 'Red Dot Award', National Design Award, Australia excellent Alumni Award, Top Ten Chinese Young Designer Award, and New Century China Talents Award. He also won Distinguished Professor Award, and has an extensive and distinguished design related publication record in international journals and conferences.

Peter Childs
Peter Childs is the co-director of the Energy Futures Lab and professorial lead in engineering design at Imperial College London. He was the founding head of school of the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London, and prior to Imperial was director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems, director of InQbate and professor at the University of Sussex. Peter has contributed to over 200 journal and conference papers, and several books including the Handbook on Mechanical Design Engineering (Elsevier, 2019) as well as co-authoring books on temperature, rotating flow and rural urban migration. He has been principal or co-investigator on contracts totalling over £80 million. His roles at Imperial include professor at large for the Innovation Design Engineering double masters degree run jointly by Imperial College and the Royal College of Art. He is editor of the Journal of Power and Energy, founder and director at QBot Ltd., and director and chairperson at BladeBUG Ltd.

2024 ICoD EDUCATION AWARD RECIPIENTS
Created in 2006, the ICoD Education Award is presented to an educator from an ICoD Member institution, in recognition of outstanding innovation or achievement in design education.
Sadık Karamustafa
Sadık Karamustafa is being recognised for his immense contributions to connecting Turkish graphic designers within the global community. A prominent figure in Turkish graphic design, Sadık is not only a designer but also a long-time educator. From 1989 to 2013, Sadık taught at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts (known over the years as GSA, İDGSA, MSÜ, and MSGSÜ), guiding many graphic design students and inspiring designers and academics with a broader perspective.
From 1982 onwards, Sadık Karamustafa worked in various management levels of GMK (Turkish Graphic Designers Association). He served as vice-president on the board of ICoD (then Icograda / International Council of Graphic Design Associations) for two terms (1995-1997 and 1997- 1999), bringing international knowledge to students in Turkey. He was one of the founders and the project director of Grafist/International Istanbul Graphic Design Days. Grafist, an educational event organised by the Department of Graphic Design at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University since 1997, was established in cooperation with GMK. The aim of Grafist was to create a meeting environment for graphic designers and students to connect, evaluate design criteria, and share opinions through seminars, workshops, and exhibitions.

Anne Nurfarina
Anne Nurfarina, also known as "Dr. Anne", is being awarded for her distinguished career as an educator, artist, professional, and researcher, Dr. Anne has emerged as a highly respected and inspirational figure, deeply committed to empowering students and children with disabilities. With 17 years of experience in teaching art and design, she has been instrumental in developing inclusive and accessible education through the Sensation Method. This innovative approach has established her as a pivotal figure in the field of inclusive education in Indonesia, recognised by the Indonesian government, other universities, national design associations, and fellow academics, particularly in relation to autism.
Anne Nurfarina has been dedicated in supporting individuals with disabilities have inspired many within the academic community. Her efforts have created a more inclusive environment, enabling students with special needs to achieve greater independence and envision brighter futures. In recognition of her exceptional contributions. Dr. Anne’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of sincere and committed educational efforts and has the potential to inspire others to take meaningful action to improve the lives of those in need. Dr. Anne’s story and journey serve as a powerful reminder to academics around the world of their calling to be lifelong learners, genuine givers, and passionate educators, who dedicate their lives to ensuring that future generations experience a better world.In her absence, Anne Nurfarina's ICoD Education Award was received by Cahya Dauday (representative of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara) (left) and presented by ICoD President Ting Xu (right).
