25.01.2011 News
London (United Kingdom) - The Sir Misha Black Award for Innovation in Design Education for 2011 has been awarded to Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) at the University of the Arts. The Award will be presented to the directors of CRiSAP, Dr Cathy Lane and Dr Angus Carlyle, at a special ceremony on 8 March 2011, at the Royal College of Art.?
The Award for Innovation was inaugurated in 1999 in order to provide recognition for those who, by contributing to the theory and/ or practice of Design Education in the United Kingdom, have made an innovative leap whereby the education of designers has been measurably improved and the profile of design education raised. In the rapidly changing world of industry, science, commerce and communication, the discipline of design must be active in serving fast moving, changing markets, social, cultural and environmental needs. ??
It recognises the achievements of those whose work has helped to expand traditional definitions of design into wholly new areas of practice. CRiSAP is a research centre dedicated to the exploration of the rich complexities of sound as an artistic practice. Its primary aim is to extend the development of the emerging disciplinary field of sound arts and to encourage the broadening and deepening of the discursive context in which sound arts is practised. The research conducted by members of CRiSAP has contributed towards the development of sound art and design as an emerging area of academic study and creative practice.
?The value of CRiSAP's work has been recognised through the funding it has received from the British Academy, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. CRiSAP staff have produced edited books and monographs, CD compilations, curated and contributed to gallery and online exhibitions and have organised conferences and symposia. These activities have all helped towards the increasing recognition of the emerging discipline of sound arts and design within a recognisable and accessible scholarly framework.
?Students have worked on collaborative projects with University of Kent radio students, Royal College of Art animation students, Circus Space and the London Sinfonietta. CRiSAP has endeavoured to extend its innovation outside the UK, and has co-produced symposia in Zurich (2009) and Aix-en-Provence (2010) as well as an evening of performances at the Gallus Theatre in Frankfurt. It has also developed a rewarding relationship with the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore that has led to artists' residencies, workshops, student and staff exchanges.
