Beijing (China) - On 27 March 2007, exactly 500 days before the opening
ceremonies of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the BOCOG unveiled the
medals for which the world's athletes will compete in 2008.
The medals were designed by Professor Xiao Yong and his team from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), under the direction of Professor Wang Min. The project to design the medals began in January 2006, with final approval by the International Olympic Committee coming over a year later.
The Beijing Olympic medals, which are fashioned from gold and jade, carry a design which symbolizes nobility and virtue: an embodiment of the traditional Chinese values of ethics and honour.
"Both noble and elegant, the design of the medals blends traditional Chinese culture with the modern Olympic ideal. We strived to create medals which represent the lifetime of honour and acclaim that they will represent for the achievements of those athletes who win them," said team leader Xiao Yong.
