Zagreb (Croatia) - On April 11, official delegates from 10 Eastern and Central European nations met for the Icograda Regional Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, to share information regarding the state of graphic design and visual communications in their countries. Members of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) presented reports and joined in an open exchange. This unique meeting represented the first time that graphic design associations from the region have met formally to compare opportunities and challenges related to design and visual communications.
Associations from Croatia, Italy, Romania, Yugoslavia, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria and Bosnia & Herzegovina met at the Faculty of Economics, University of Zagreb. Spirited discussion took place regarding the state of the graphic design profession.
Associations shared experiences and challenges. David Grossman, Icograda President, stated: "Graphic design communities in this region face common challenges of promoting the understanding of design in economies in transition. They face problems in establishing professional standards of practice. They face competition of advertising agencies, unqualified technical providers and international design agencies."
All participants also noted the need for a greater action in promoting graphic design in their region and decided to collaborate in developing the appropriate promotional tools, based on case studies of successful applications of graphic design. These actions should be aimed at the business community and government and portray the process of designing in terms that can be widely understood."
The next Central and Eastern European Regional Meeting will take place in Brno in June 2002 in conjunction with an International Icograda Conference on the subject of "Corporate Identity / Corporate Integrity", which will take place concurrently with the launch of the 20th Brno Biennial.
Icograda organizes Regional Meetings of design associations in conjunction with Congresses, Conferences, and Board Meetings around the world. Icograda is the representative international organization for graphic design and visual communication, with 69 member associations in 44 countries worldwide. Founded in London in 1963, Icograda holds consultative status with UNESCO, UNIDO, and the Council of Europe.
